U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - certificates of further credit as allowed by the Relief Act of 1821, 1821-1822.

The Relief Act of 1821 allowed a debtor to give up part of his land to complete payment on the rest or to extend the time of credit. These certificates, signed by the Register, declare that further credit has been extended on a certain tract. Each certificate includes the name of the buyer, date of purchase, location, and amount paid on the land. The certificates state that the buyer has surrendered the first certificate and that credit has been extended. They each set out a schedule for payment, listing the amount due on specific future dates. These records document the procedures for the administration of the Relief Act of 1821 and illustrate the difficulties settlers encountered attempting to obtain and keep land.
